Gas safety performance metrics and compliance

This article is one of a series that will help create awareness on the major components of our KEDNY/KEDLI rate case agreements.

We’re very proud of our long history of safe and reliable gas operations in New York State. Because of high-profile incidents in the industry, we have a heightened focus on gas safety and we have undertaken a number of measures to improve our safety performance.

“The bar has been raised on safety and compliance for all gas utilities,” says Bob De Marinis, National Grid Vice President for Operations and Construction NY.  “And as a leader in the industry we will do everything we can to meet the heightened expectations of our regulators and customers. Our rate case agreements include a number of measures to enhance the safety of our gas systems.”

To ensure safety and compliance the Public Service Commission gives us Gas Safety Performance Metrics that are measured each calendar year. Each metric has a target and carries a financial penalty if the target is not met.

The metrics include targets for:

  • Replacing leak prone pipe
  • Reducing the number of low-level leaks
  • Reducing damage from third-parties
  • Responding quickly to odor calls and other emergencies.

We’re also upping our efforts to better educate the public on the importance of:

  • Recognizing and reporting gas odors
  • Improving our training and coordination with first responders
  • Deploying additional damage prevention resources to protect our underground facilities
  • Gas safety outreach — in addition to our Leading with Safety initiative to teach young children about natural gas safety, we have established a Public Awareness team to provide more community outreach around gas safety.

And to further beef up safety, we are adding a team of compliance analysts and quality assurance/quality control inspectors to track and ensure we meet our gas safety performance targets.
