Spring is here … Get Up-Get Out-Get Moving!
A message from WLM Co-Chair Martin Sobers
Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to get up and get out. Though it sounds great, sometimes the hardest challenge is finding the time to get moving. I like the gym, it can be a lot of fun, but fitting it into my daily schedule can be a challenge. Here are some things I do to keep moving and keep my energy up. These are not necessarily traditional exercises, but they are guaranteed to get the blood flowing, and they are not major strains on your time. It’s all about perspective. Have fun looking for opportunities to move throughout your regular day …
Calisthenics – Pushups and sit-ups are great, but setting aside the time, oh boy. However, I do always manage to find time to get in some TV viewing on a regular basis. A friend suggested to me years ago; “During commercials, complete 1-2 sets of each.” That kept it simple, yet I still get a workout.
Household Chores – At some point, you have to clean. But, do you clean to music? Putting on your favorite tune and dancing while you work will help burn extra calories. And it’s a great way to pass the time. You will be done before you realize it!
Parking Lots – Do you always look for the closest parking spot? Why not park a little further away, give yourself the chance to walk and get some extra steps?
Park & Play – Go to the park and play, or join a team where you can play some basketball, handball or volleyball.
Phone – Do you have a headset? If not, get one. Take your calls standing and walk around. You will get a lot of movement, and it gets you out of your seat and away from the screen for a few minutes.
Walk – On your next family outing, pick a location that allows you to explore the outdoors, get some fresh air, while getting a little bit of cardio as well.
