Meet our newest employees – up close and personal

They’re young, they’re fun … and they’re as excited to be here as we are to have them! Meet the GDP in part one of our three-part series

The Graduate Development Program (GDP) Class of 2015 went from eight weeks’ summer orientation across the company, to their ‘steady day jobs’ this month. They love the program and the company (see recent Infonet news article). Now, see what they’re like outside of work in our first article of a three-part series …

What’s your favorite holiday and why?
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving by far. If you talked to anyone in my office, they would probably tell you I’m always eating.  Family is also very important to me and on Thanksgiving the whole family comes together. Family, food and football is Derek Delzer in a nutshell!

What does your perfect weekend look like?
My perfect weekend would consist of some sort of physical activity, whether it be hiking, playing a sport or just working out with friends.

What’s one word that describes you best?

Associate Engineer, Electric Transmission Planning

What was your dream job growing up?
When I was seven years old, I lost my favorite Skippy puppy stuffed animal at the July 4th fireworks celebration in my hometown. It was pretty traumatic. Then, as a replacement (or so I thought), my dad took me to where they ‘made’ Skippies, and took me to a real golden retriever litter where I got to pick one out! It was the best day ever and I dreamt of becoming a veterinarian for many years after that. Now, part of me still aspires to be a stay-at-home dog mother.

What’s your favorite color?
My favorite color is Crayola Tickle-Me-Pink. Everything about it is adorable. Actually, my favorite color is yellow – the calm, golden, slightly faded kind – because it reminds me of a warm summer sun. But the name isn’t nearly as cool. Maybe my favorite color should just be Tickle-Me-Yellow?

What do you consider your biggest accomplishment outside of work?
My biggest accomplishment outside of work has been earning my college degree. I’m the first of my family to pursue a college education instead of going into one of the ‘trades,’ and I couldn’t be happier with the success that it has brought me (namely, working here at National Grid!).

Do you have a hobby or activity your coworkers might be surprised about?
Outside of work, my passion is volleyball. I played in high school as well as coaching and playing during my college years. I haven’t played in about six months though, since I relocated to Massachusetts, because I don’t know anyone in the area who plays. If anyone reading this plays indoor or outdoor, get in touch with me! I’d love to get back into things.

If you could live in a book, TV show or movie, what would it be?
Easiest question of the day: Harry Potter! I’m envisioning myself riding on a Hippogriff and winning the Tri-wizard Tournament.  Who the heck doesn’t want to live in a world where you have a magic wand, flying broomsticks and can attend Hogwarts?

Watch for the next two articles in our series, where you’ll meet more GDP employees!
