Major gas projects set to begin in Downstate NY
Two major, long-term company natural gas initiatives are set to begin in National Grid’s NYC service area. One is the company’s Local Law 30 valve installation program, whereby we’re complying with NYC and FDNY building codes to install shut-off devices (service valves) outside designated building units to make sure they are accessible to first responders in case of an emergency. This affects customers in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. We have until November 2019 to complete all installations.
The Queens Natural Gas Reliability Project will begin this month. It’s a $100M-plus gas infrastructure modernization and improvement project in that will make available much-needed gas capacity to certain sections of Queens. Projected to be a 16-18 month project, it will involve installing more than six miles of new pipe in the backbone of the system.
