Boots on the Ground for Heroes

Boots-on-the-groundThis year’s Memorial Day Weekend saw a special tribute to veterans at Roger Williams Park in Rhode Island. Operation Stand Down Rhode Island (OSDRI)—an organization dedicated to helping and honoring veterans—hosted Boots on the Ground for Heroes, a memorial in the form of nearly seven thousand boots (each pair representing a fallen hero) arranged in rows in front of the Temple of Music at Roger Williams Park. National Grid responded to OSDRI’s request for help, with twenty-seven employee volunteers participating in the event.

Boots-on-the-ground-1Boots on the Ground for Heroes honors veterans who have fallen since the beginning of the War on Terror in operations New Dawn, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. National Grid employees from various parts of the company helped other volunteers in laying out the 6844 boots, adorning each pair with an American flag and a bio about the fallen hero.

The Memorial Day event on Saturday featured keynote speaker Sgt. Major Todd Parisi, and over the course of the weekend, over ten thousand spectators came to view the memorial.
