An honorable mission – saluting five years of leadership

The Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) is one of National Grid’s most successful Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to date. In recent years, six out of eight VERG projects were shortlisted for the Chairman’s Award. The group won in 2012 and one project is a finalist for this year’s Award. Co-founder and recently-named Chair, Peter Allen, said Turrini’s strong focus and leadership over the years was instrumental in the group’s success.

“We shaped the mission and vision along with Tim Horan, our executive sponsor. But Ross created our template and gave the guidance to create something from nothing. He provided the leadership to get us off the ground and have a presence across jurisdictions.”

Turrini makes it clear that VERG is not focused on recognition, but supporting veterans and helping them reintegrate into society after service. “We serve our communities through events, charities and partnerships, like Habitat for Humanity veterans builds. We’re also instrumental in recruiting skilled veterans to work at National Grid, continuing to help them develop and network within the company.”

VERG quickly grew from four people to about 200 within a year. That prompted Turrini to introduce a new operating model, one of his proudest accomplishments. It appoints leads in each jurisdiction to increase efficiency by closely aligning with regional needs and initiatives. The model is so successful that it was later adopted for all ERGs.

Horan reflects on Turrini’s tenure with gratitude. “Ross has a passion for the support of Veterans and this is clearly seen in his accomplishments over the last five years as the Chair of VERG. I’m thankful for his time and efforts in support of VERG from the beginning and all that he’s done on behalf of our Veterans.”

Turrini will continue to support VERG by serving as a mentor for the group. Did you know you don’t have to be a veteran to join VERG? Find out how to get in on the fun* and make a difference!
