A note from Keith Hutchison

‘So proud of our company’
So happy for the recognition we’re getting as an employer of choice

In the relatively short time I’ve had the privilege of serving as SVP, US HR and Chief Diversity Officer, I’ve been absolutely delighted with the strides our company continues to make to be a real employer of choice. It’s a testament to our HR employees but reflects the passion and integrity of our entire workforce, too.

We continue to expand our Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) employee resource groups (ERGs), we’ve enhanced our parental leave benefits, we’ve been recognized as a ‘Best Place to Work’ for LGBTQ communities and allies and we just the other day received Columbia University’s coveted Age Smart Employer Award, which was also recently highlighted in Forbes magazine.

Now, I’m so pleased to share with you that we have made EOP, Inc’s (Equal Opportunity Publication’s) Careers and the disABLED Top 50 Employers List for 2018. The readers of Careers & the disABLED magazine selected the top companies in the country where they’d most like to work, or believe provide a positive working environment for people with disabilities. And we made the top 50!

Honestly, it’s no surprise to me … and I hope it isn’t to you, either. We regularly participate in job fairs of all types, including those targeted to individuals with disabilities, and we actively recruit diverse employees through these fairs and other avenues.

The many accomplishments of our Enabling Disability Confidence ERG include growing mentoring opportunities. The group also sponsors a company-wide (US and UK) EmployABILITY program – where we continue to hire more and more qualified people with disabilities, who are real assets and positive contributors to our workforce.

So I extend my sincere gratitude and admiration to employees everywhere who value and reflect our commitment to I&D at National Grid. This commitment fits squarely within our company’s purpose of Bring Energy to Life and our values of Do the Right Thing and Find a Better Way. And I’m honored to be part of all you do to foster and embrace a truly inclusive workforce that mirrors our diverse customers and communities … from veterans, to Native Americans, to individuals of all races, ages, ethnicities, genders and backgrounds.

As with any journey, there’s much more to do. And we have many more opportunities to create a positive employee experience and environment for everyone. It will take the commitment of everyone in the company, top down and bottom up. To help us continue to drive change, you may want to consider becoming a member of one – or more – of our thriving ERGs.

For my part, I look forward to our company being recognized in the future, as we continue to support all of you to bring your best and succeed every day. You all have unique voices we want to hear, and that make us the great company we are and aspire to be.
