A celebration of supplier diversity
On February 26 we were honored to host the National Minority Business Council’s (NMBC) 35th Annual Awards Luncheon in New York City, and pay tribute to six minority-owned enterprises. We have a proud history of supporting women, minority and veteran-owned small businesses in our service area. We aim to be a global leader in developing strong, sustainable partnerships with diverse suppliers.
The event held special meaning for us since our own Carla Hunter Ramsey, Director of Supplier Diversity, served as the mistress of ceremonies, and presented two awards in the name of her late father, William J. Hunter. William was a charter member of NMBC, a procurement specialist for NYU Langone Medical Center for nearly three decades, and the founder of three separate companies in printing, publishing, and music recording. Both Noise Consulting Group, an IT consulting services firm, and Printabilities, a printing and promotional products distributor, accepted the William J. Hunter Outstanding Minority Business Award.
Ray Schlaff, our Chief Procurement Officer, gave the opening keynote to 250 guests. Ray outlined upcoming opportunities for diverse suppliers in line with National Grid’s future investments in infrastructure. And he reinforced the importance of supporting small businesses within our communities to bolster local economies. Following the ceremony, Ray noted, “We were able to tell National Grid’s story with great pride. It was very satisfying to hear so many diverse suppliers based in our service territory express their gratitude for the positive impact our Supplier Diversity team has had on their business.”
Here’s what some event attendees had to say about the event and our supplier diversity program:
“National Grid is a client that looks to vendors to bring unique IT solutions to the table that offer operational efficiencies and cost saving in their business operations. As a minority vendor, we have been able to exercise that flexibility and nimbleness to bring those solutions to the table and as a result we have been able to grow our revenues and establish more opportunities in Upstate NY.
-Angelia Johnson, CEO, Noise Consulting Group.
“Morgan Stanley was honored to be one of the recipients of the National Minority Business Council Outstanding Corporate Supplier Diversity Award. The Firm is committed to efforts which promote diversity through our hiring and in our interactions with our clients and vendors.”
-Shendora Pridgen- VP, Firmwide Sourcing, Morgan Stanley
“The supplier diversity team take teamwork, passion and success to another level. It was an honor to be able to attend the event and really hit home to me the impact and growing footprint National Grid has in the Supplier Diversity space. An example of how we take good and make it great!”
– Chris McConnachie VP, US Treasury, National Grid
We were extremely pleased to be invited to the 35th NMBC Council meeting. Most meetings, seminars etc. that we attend are focused on only one industry and theme. This particular event was a diverse grouping of industries and business people and allowed Har-Per Sales to network accordingly. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to meet additional people at National Grid and also to expand our contacts elsewhere. We thank you again for the invitation and look forward to expanding our services to you and others.
